Shaping Positive Lifestyles and Attitudes through School Health (SPLASH) is focused on providing nutrition and physical activity education to Michigan's SNAP eligible populations. SPLASH is a school-based intervention facilitated by Michigan Department of Community Health staff and 17 regional comprehensive school health coordinators as a support to approximately 2,330 teachers, with 118,000 K-12 students in over 260 low-income schools across Michigan.

The Behavioral Objectives of SPLASH are to:
apple Focus on fruit
broccoli Vary your veggies
whole wheat bread Make half your grains whole
milk carton Choose low or no-fat dairy
walking Be physically active everyday and balance caloric intake with calories expended.

Schools are selected who qualify with greater than 50% free and reduced lunch participation, where nutritional and physical activity education would otherwise be limited without SNAP-Ed support. A school-based intervention such as SPLASH not only promotes classroom education, but also serves the local community by educating families about nutrition and physical activity.

SPLASH is comprised of a four component intervention with the objectives of increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables, no/low fat dairy products, whole grains and a physically active lifestyle. Components include 1) classroom teaching with selected Michigan Model for Health® and nutritionally-enhanced Exemplary Physical Education Curriculum (EPEC) lessons, as best practices used to promote healthy eating and physical activity in students; 2) per-pupil funding to conduct a pre-approved event to provide family connections for parents and students; 3) new teacher training in the MMH or EPEC curricula where all teachers are provided with substitute teacher costs (or alternative) to facilitate one planning/integration day to incorporate the lessons into the classroom; and 4) each teacher that has been previously trained it allocated funds to purchase classroom support materials to enhance the teaching of nutrition education and physical activity in the classroom. The premise of SPLASH is to generate a synergistic effect of the four components working together to produce positive student behavioral outcomes.

PROGRAM SUCCESS

Evaluation regarding school participation in 2010-11 showed 76% of 3rd grade SPLASH schools participated in 3 of 4 SPLASH activities (MMH, EPEC, classroom support materials, and family connection events). More to come on the student behavioral outcome differences in schools based on their level of participation.

Primary outcomes from the 2010-11 SPLASH student behavioral surveys:

- On most days three out of five third grade SPLASH students eat food from each of the food groups (5.1% increase)

- On most days three out of four fourth grade SPLASH students drink low fat milk (5.5% increase).

- Seven out of ten fourth grade SPLASH students recognize that it is important for their age group to get 60 minutes of physical activity everyday (15.3% increase)

- On most days three out of four fifth grade students in SPLASH eat vegetables (16% increase).
